The Bay Area Mentoring Project
The school was locked down because of gang activity in an Oakland neighborhood, and the stringed instrument players were inside with a professional cellist from Boston playing “Ode to Joy”. Thanks to the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, The Bay Area Mentoring Project is underway. This mentoring program, conducted by Classics for Kids Artistic Director, Michael Reynolds, includes three week-long sessions in a number of music classrooms in and around the San Francisco area. Ultimately, this project aims to:
- increase enthusiasm and participation among students and teachers for stringed instruments in these schools.
- keep kids involved in a productive activity inside the school.
